Rules For Cleaning Out Your Closet

It’s a new year and time for a new you!  All of resolutions can come true if you focus on your goals.  One of the many ways to reach your goals is to organize your closet so you can quickly put yourself together and show the world on the outside what is truly on the inside.  This week we start with the basics that allow you to clear things out so you can begin to build the foundation of a great wardrobe.

If one of your new year’s resolutions is to build a better wardrobe, get organized, or make your life simpler – start with your closet.  Think of our closet as one of your many tools needed to function in the world around you.  It may seem too simplistic but think about it…every time you go to leave the house, go to bed at night, or get up in the morning (even on a Saturday) you have to face your closet.  Make your life easier, more organized, and even more fulfilling by having a wardrobe that works for you.  Let’s get started by having a “closet clean out session”.

Rules for cleaning out your closet:

  • If you wear it weekly hang it on the “keep” side of your closet.
  • If you have not worn it in over a year hang it on the “maybe give away” side.
  • Don’t forget to go through your drawers.  They are part of your wardrobe and should be included in this exercise.
  • Don’t forget your makeup. For foundations, concealer, etc., toss it if you have not used it in several months.  Same with mascara.  Lipstick and shadows will last longer but do not keep them if you have not used them in over a year.
  • Back to your closet…make sure you include all seasons of your wardrobe and to be sure you go through the same exercise with your shoes.  Keep shoes polished and in good repair so you can grab and go.
  • Toss anything you have not worn in three or more years.  Cuts and styles change so trust me, I speak from experience…you won’t look good in these items anymore.
  • Once your piles are complete, try on all of your “maybe” items to decide what to keep and what to give away.
  • Find a great charity to give these items to and don’t feel guilty! You are benefiting a great cause and your items will be cherished by someone other than yourself so in a way…you are spreading the wealth.
  • Go through your “keep” items and decide what needs to be cleaned, repaired or something new to make the outfit look fresh and new again.  This is the best way to update your wardrobe without starting over.  New colors of tops, new cuts in the bottoms, or new shoes, are not only fun to shop for but give you the added bonus of feeling like you are being practical about your wardrobe.

Although it takes some time to complete this exercise, the benefits will last all year, and save you time in the long run.

When it’s all done, go out with a smile on your face because you look great and exude confidence. You have it together!

Best-
Andrea
