Core Basics
Last week we focused on cleaning out your closet so you are organized, put together and ready to go at a moment’s notice. This week we continue to focus on your closet by detailing out the core set of basics that every woman should have in their closet. Basics are the foundation of a great wardrobe. They can be worn over and over again without looking old or tired because they change their look based on what is worn to accompany them. This can range from shoes and accessories to different styled tops and bottoms. Let’s dive a little deeper into the world of basics…
Here is the top ten list of basic items that every woman should own:
- A three piece black suit, including pants, blazer and skirt. They can come in varying cuts and styles but the fabric and color of black should all be the same. Further, they should all be tailored to your body shape. These items have great mileage and can be worn together or separately for years to come.
- Several pairs of great jeans. I say several pairs because there are so many great cuts and styles these days. Some have glitz and some are plain. Boot cut, classic or skinny- jeans are a primary staple for your wardrobe. Be sure to have some you can wear with flats and some that are tailored to be worn with heals.
- The white tailored shirt is another basic that lives on for years and years. It can be worn with anything.
- Black pumps and black dress boots. Keep them polished and in good repair.
- A high quality belt. One in black and one in brown. Also add a chain belt to this list - think Chanel.
- Colorful blouses in solids and patterns. Go for colors and fabrics that work with the season, your skin tone and are not 10 years old with shoulder pads and metallic blue leopard print. I think you get my point here ladies. The eighties are over.
- White t-shirt, black t-shirt and every color in-between. This is the same with long sleeved tees for cooler times of the year. These are great layering pieces as well.
- The little black dress is a closet essential. If you already have one start adding colorful dresses that can take you from your more muted and sophisticated moods (tan, brown, camel) to your more playful occasions (red, green, purple, and sequins)
- A pearl necklace and stud earrings, diamond studs and solitaire pendant, gold and silver hoops, and glitzy chandelier earrings. Real or costume these items are the final essential to any outfit.
- A great quality leather jacket, long camel coat for wearing over suits and dresses, and a trench coat for rainy or slightly cool days will ensure you have the right outerwear for every occasion.
Keep these items clean, pressed and stored properly in your wardrobe. If you don’t own some of these items go and get them. Look for quality, even if it costs a little more because you will wear them again and again and again.
There are many more basics that could be added to this list. I have truly just scratched the surface. Depending on where you live, you may have many more items considered essential for your climate. The point is to make your closet work for you and if you haven’t already done so…this list will get you started.
Best-
Andrea
