Career Priority #3: Money

We all want a job that fits our authentic self. When we have a position like this, we are happier, more fulfilled and have a greater chance of success.

What I know to be true is that every woman has one or two top career priorities—work values that are essential to her professional fulfillment.

This month, I share four of the most common career priorities among professional women. Each week, I’ll highlight a specific priority and provide the definition.

As I describe each priority, decide for yourself which one most closely matches your preference. You may find you have two that are equally important. That’s fine, but do narrow it down to no more than two. Doing so will allow you to clarify your top professional priorities.

This week, I highlight the career priority known as “Money.”

Money

I remember hearing the analogy that the “vibe and energy” of New York City is money, Los Angeles is fame and Washington, DC is power. Having spent time in each of these cities (and having lived in WDC), I completely agree.

If a top career priority for you is money, this may mean a desire for stability and security, or it may mean a desire for status, keeping up with your peers, etc.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to make money - and lots of it! I frequently hear my clients apologizing for wanting to earn a high salary. Why? Perhaps because women often get the message that the desire to make a decent salary indicates greed or selfishness. Nothing could be further from the truth. Making money is nothing to be apologetic about. Just about everyone wants to make a good income. And some people want to make scads of cash! Or, as my good friend Beth calls it - “Coin.”

Does the career priority of money ring true for you? Or, is it not a top motivator for you?

I encourage you to think about it this week. Please remember, there is no right or wrong here. It’s simply about identifying which career priorities resonate with you.

Next week, I’ll highlight the priority known as “Influence.”

Until next week, here’s to your continued success!
