Unlocking your Creativity

Creativity requires the courage to let go of certainties. - Erich Fromm

Whether you are working on a project, presentation, or household task list, creativity is a key ingredient to success. Creativity is your ability to solve problems, adapt to change, and create something new and unique. It is also your ability to see new possibilities, to develop new ideas, to be imaginative, and to innovate. Creativity does not just fall into the realm of artists and musicians; we are all creative beings.

While we all have creative potential, many people have disconnected from their creative mind and feel stagnant or stuck. Not to worry… you can reconnect with your creative side and get those creative juices flowing again. Creativity requires that you let go of your need to “know” the answers, always be right, and control the situation. Being creative means having the courage to follow your creative impulses rather than trying to stay with the status quo or trying fit into the way things are usually done.

So, it’s time to get creative… the more you get those creative juices flowing the more success you will experience. Over the next few weeks, I will share 10 tips to help you unlock your creativity. Here are the first 2 tips:

1) Change your environment – When you feel stuck or have hit a creative block, try changing your scenery. Take a few essential supplies with you and go to a park or a coffee shop and work for a while. If that is not possible, simply get up and take a walk around the office. Let your mind wander as you take in the new scenery. Try not to think too hard… just let yourself relax and enjoy the change of environment.

2) Take risks – In order to get your creative juices flowing, you must be willing to take risks and let go of your need for certainties. You must be open to new ideas. It is important to let your ideas flow without censoring or judging them at first. Some ideas may seem silly and that’s ok. You never know when one idea may spark another idea that turns out to be the perfect solution to your problem.

If you are afraid to take risks than you will never be able to create and move forward. If you fear failure, remember that Thomas Edison was known to say that he didn’t fail 10,000 times. He simply discovered 10,000 ways not to make the light bulb before created the first incandescent light bulb. So let go of your fears and take some risks!

Give these two tips a try this week and notice any changes in your creativity. Please feel free to share your experiences by leaving a comment on this post.

Next week I will cover tips 3-4.

Create a great week!
