Letting Go As A Mantra

Learning to let go, as in relationships, control, clutter and emotions is definitely an aspect of any successful life. Letting go is a fantastic coping mechanism; if things don’t go as planned or don’t go well, we can take the position of letting go. It is not being “positive,” or in denial, it is a way of being that is similar to floating along instead of resisting the current. When you can’t fight the current, you can go with it.

This comes up time and time again, and seems to be one of the themes of midlife. It is definitely the theme when you care for a chronically ill family member or have a disappointment at work. Lots of different words come into my mind around these situations such as the word “acceptance.”

Forgiveness is also a letting go. Holding on to that which hurts us has many of us reliving the pain over and over. For the sake of this column I am discussing the small to mediocre hurts that we experience within our family, our friends and our work. Often we hold a grudge and lose more energy than it is worth! Forgiveness does not mean that we let others cross the boundaries again. It means we let go of the emotional attachment to whatever the problem is, and move forward in our life.

We become aware of the present moment, and let that be our lighthouse to guide us from moment to moment.

If we stay grounded in the present moment, then we are letting go of all that came before us.

Even for a moment……… even just a fleeting moment.

That is a good start.

What do you need to let go of? By letting go of something, how might your life improve?

Warmest regards,

Lorraine
