The most important part of networking is staying in touch. After you’ve met someone, write a note sharing what you enjoyed about meeting them.Highlight one or two things that you think would help remind them of who you are and that will cement the connection.

Keep an eye out for articles, books, events or ideas that you think would be of interest to them. Send them a note with the article, even send them the book with one or more pages flagged with a Post-It note, that mentions a particular passage that had you think of them. But don’t be a pest.

Pick up the phone and give a quick call every now and again. It’s nice to hear someone’s voice. At the end of the call, ask if there’s anything you can do to be of service. Perhaps they are struggling with a work project, looking for information on a topic you know well, or need someone to brainstorm with.

By investing just a few minutes here and there will greatly increase the probability of your name being at the top of their list when a job opportunity in your field comes along.

This concept also works to make connections and gain visibility within your current organization.
