Amalaki and Your Health: Part Three
Cancer Protection
Chinese researchers are finding amalaki to be an especially rich source of cancer-protective chemicals, including quercetin, corilagin, isostrictiniin and gallic, ellagic and chebulagic acids. All of these chemicals are powerful antioxidants, helping to protect the body from potentially cancer-promoting free radicals. Another study conducted by scientists at Nagasaki University in Japan reveals that amalaki extract can help prevent the growth of cancerous cells in the stomach, skin and womb.
Amalaki also shows promise in reducing the hazards of anticancer drugs like Cyclophosphamide (CP), which is prescribed frequently despite its dangerous side effects including liver damage and immunotoxicity. CP users treated with amalaki experienced a boost in glutathione and other key antioxidants in the kidney and liver. This suggests that this extraordinary fruit can play an important role in combination therapy in cancer patients, helping to counteract negative side effects of conventional cancer treatments like chemotherapy.
Diabetes Preventive
The amalaki fruit can also help to prevent diabetes-related problems, such as vision loss from cataracts caused by the disease. Scientists from the National Institute of Nutrition in Hyderabad, India, found that amalaki is able to block a chemical called aldose reductase, which appears to promote the development of cataracts in diabetic patients.
