Major Changes for a Green Kitchen
If your appliances are younger than 15 years old and you are happy with them, there are ways to reduce the energy used to operate them. First of all, keep your refrigerator set at 36 to 40 degrees and your freezer at 0-5 degrees. If you are not certain of the temperature, buy an inexpensive appliance thermometer to test it. According to GreenHomeGuide keeping them colder “will do little for your food but will waste electricity”.
We are advised to choose the most efficient cycle for your dishwasher and air-dry instead of heat dry. That practice can save on energy consumption by as much as 15 percent.
Now, the fun part. If your appliance is more that 15 years old, you will actually save money and reduce energy consumption by replacing it now as oppose to waiting for it to die a natural death. There are a myriad of great resources for innovative new products designed to work efficiently and eco-friendly. If you are serious about a complete make-over, take the time to research green products ranging from light fixtures to countertops and flooring. It is a whole new world out there with lots of options to help us be more careful with our precious Mother Earth.
